Writer, teacher, and beer ambassador Erin Miles of Perfect Pour Magazine and Lincoln City Councilwoman Leirion Gaylor Baird enjoy Zipline’s new year round IPA, Alpha Modern on this episode of Pints and Politics. It’s a session IPA that has a lot of hops on the nose, but doesn’t have as much of the bitterness on the back of the tongue. It has a lower alcohol content (4.9%) and is easy to drink.

16 – France to Kalamazoo and beer in-between

We travel the world talking about how one of our guests affected the 2007 French election, recent coverage of legalizing marijuana in Colorado and its affects on Nebraska, craft beer similarities between Kalamazoo and Lincoln, and starting a french restaurant in Nebraska.

We get to travel to Kalamazoo and sample an ale brought in by Michigan native, and NET News reporter Bill Kelly. To pair with the ale, Lawrence De Villiers of The Normandy restaurant in Lincoln, brought in Dubliner cheese and smoked salmon.

Bill brought in the Two Hearted Ale by Bell’s Brewery in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

15 – The brewery formerly known as Get Lost

15 – The brewery formerly known as Get Lost

We chat with Sam Riggins, former brewer at Nebraska Brewing Company, who will be bringing an exciting new Brewery to Lincoln in 2018. He plans to create a variety of Belgium farmhouse beers including examples of Saison which he brought to the show. Tommy Rezac of 1400 KLIN radio also joins us to talk his favorite beer hangouts and all things Husker football.

Sam brought us two Saisons that are a preview of what will be in his brewery. Both beers started identically with one taking the additional step of being fermented in Brettanomyces. They are both dry and crisp beers, that have a fruity, spicy quality to them.

Sam was working under the name “Get Lost” as a brewery but wasn’t able to get the rights, so the new name of the brewery is still under development, but it will be in the old Laser Quest space at 6800 P St. Suite 300, starting hopefully in the spring of 2018.

Plus, Sam walks us through the brewing process for creating his newest recipes.

They get to try out Code Beer Co.’s Pale Ale, a hop forward, heavy on the nose beer that uses Simcoe and Equinox hops to produce an old piney smell with some newer tropical aromas. It is paired with a good malt character that adds some complexity to the palette.
